Cupping (Dry cupping)

Ottawa cupping from Body Poets Massage Therapy

Cupping is an ancient technique to relieve sore muscles, congestion, asthma and lung complaints, inflammatory or auto-immune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, constipation, and diarrhea. Even cellulite is treated using cupping, to help it look smoother!

Cupping is still used as home-care around the world and is recognized by the World Health Organization for its effectiveness. Here at downtown Ottawa's Body Poets we use a modern suction-style of cup: we place the cups strategically on your body using mild suction, and we can leave them in place during treatment or move them around as a massage. We use dry cupping only. We do not use wet cupping (with needles and drawing of blood) and we do not use heated cups. Our dry cupping is done using suction cups.

Cupping is a form of myofascial release, separating layers of connective tissue when they become stuck: it improves circulation, to decrease pain and increase flexibility. The therapist can work on more than one area at a time, and can (when appropriate) work deeply into layers of muscle and connective tissue to release 'knots'.

But cupping does not have to be a deep technique: it is suitable for everything from baby massage to sports massage to senior massage, using a mild, moderate, or strong intensity depending on your health and skin integrity. The lighter forms of cupping are a great relaxation massage.

(Note: because it increases circulation and draws blood to external capillaries, deep cupping may leave temporary, painless, circular bruises - as its popularity increases, some Hollywood actors are being seen with these at public events.)
